The Packer girls hockey team hung with No. 7 ranked New Prague for about half of the game, but in the end they couldn’t keep up in a 6-1 loss in the second round of the Steve’s Pizza/Austin Merchant’s Holiday tournament in Riverside Arena Friday.

Austin (2-12 overall) got on the board when freshman Chloe Summerfield got free on a breakaway and she shook off a defender as she deked the goalie and scored to tie things up at 1-1 with 15:30 left in the second.

The Trojans (12-4 overall) answered back when Brittany Sticha slapped in a powerplay goal two minutes later and NP took over late in the second when Dani Kocina scored a powerplay goal and Kasey Marquardt scored.

“We played them tough for about a period and a half,” Austin head coach Denny Bray said. “Then we started getting tired, which I expected because we worked our tails off in the first period.”

Austin freshman Mara Overby played strong in the net as she made several diving stops and finished with 38 saves.

“Mara did well and they’re a good team,” Bray said.
