TARTAN — The Hayfield boys basketball team showed they can play with the state’s best when they beat Spring Lake Park (5-3 overall), which is ranked No. 8 in Class ‘AAA,’ 70-59 in the Tartan Invite Thursday.

The Vikings (6-1 overall) opened the game on an 18-2 run and they closed it on a 10-3 run.

“It’s as big a win as we’ve had, as far as who we’re playing,” Hayfield head coach Chris Pack said. “Last year they ran us off the floor.”

Hayfield junior Cole Kruger poured in 31 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win.

“They just didn’t have an answer for Cole inside,” Pack said.

Hayfield will now play Centennial in the semifinals at Tartan Friday at 6:15 p.m.
