Unopposed King eager to work with new council members

When other candidates eagerly watched results for their races Tuesday night, Council Member Steve King was already looking ahead to his second term.

That’s because King ran unopposed in his re-election bid in Ward 2. But it won’t be business as usual for King next year, as he’ll be joined on the City Council by two new members.

“I’m looking forward to a cohesive council,” King said. “I’m looking forward to new people that bring new ideas.”

The new members will need some time to adjust to the Council, but King said it should be smooth sailing if the newcomers have an open mind and make good decisions for the city.

“I think if you come at it with a personal agenda, there’s a pretty steep learning curve,” he said. “If you’re there just to listen and make good, clear decisions, it’s not rocket science.”

The new council members will have plenty of help, as King said the city has excellent staff to rely on.

King also said he’s looking forward to continuing to work on flood mitigation efforts, especially the North Main flood wall. Vision 2020 will also help a community King said is taking steps forward.

“Austin’s growing in population and it’s growing in development, so I think we’re riding this tide of development at the right time,” King said.

With an easy election behind him, King is looking forward to continuing to serve his hometown.

“It’s an absolute honor to serve on the City Council,” King said.
