Best bets: Hard hits and hunts and good eats

Blooming Prairie receiver Weston Fiebiger braces for contact after making a catch against Faribault Bethlehem Academy in Faribault earlier this month. The Blossoms won 12-7 and clinched a share of their 8th straight Gopher Valley Conference title with the win.

Brace yourselves, folks, because there will be hard-hitting action this weekend throughout the area. Some of you may be ready. Others that live in the woods, have fur and can’t read this article, not so much.

Down to the wire

The intensity begins tonight, as the top-seeded Blooming Prairie Awesome Blossoms take on No. 2 seed Faribault Bethlehem Academy. The Section 1A title game starts at 7 p.m. at Blooming Prairie High School, 202 Fourth Ave. NW.

More hard hits

Blooming Prairie isn’t the only local football game. Grand Meadow is also playing at 7 p.m. Friday. For those willing to make the trek, the Section 1 nine man title game will be in Spring Grove.

Slugfest — in the woods

It’s all quiet and peaceful in the woods until the first firearms deer season opener kicks off. The season starts at sunrise Saturday and continues through the evening of Sunday, Nov. 11, for local zones. So for the next week, there’ll be plenty of huntin’ bucks and drivin’ trucks. Zones 254 and 255, which surround Austin and stretch to the Albert Lea area, are both hunter’s choice, one-deer limit designations this year. For more information or complete rules and regulations, go to www.dnr.state.mn.us/hunting/deer/index.html.

Catering to the hunters

This event isn’t as hard-hitting, but it is for hunters. Moscow Lutheran Church, northwest of Austin, is hosting its annual hunters’ lunch and bake sale. The event is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Moscow Lutheran Church is located on Mower County 27/Freeborn County 25 6.5 miles west of the Oak Park Mall in Austin.

Church feeds

OK, these may not be hard-hitting, except in the stomach. Check out one of these local church feeds on Saturday: St. John’s Lutheran in Sargeant’s fall festival from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or the Lyle Our Savior’s Lutheran beef supper from 4 to 7 p.m. Eat up.

Other events

And finally, election season is reaching its peak. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 6. For a list of polling locations and times, go to www.co.mower. mn.us/Auditor-Treasurer-Election.htm.
