Packers drop girls hockey opener to Waseca 8-7 in OT

WASECA — The Austin girls hockey team lost its season opener 8-7 in overtime at Waseca Saturday.

The Packers (0-1 overall) tied the game at 7-7 when they pulled their goalie and Kennedy Thompson scored 34 seconds left in the game, but the Bluejays won the game with an overtime goal.

Thompson, a senior, finished with three goals and an assist, Carley Grunewald had two goals and an assist, Madison Overby and Chloe Summerfield each had one goal, and Lesley Fuerstenberg and Myia Hoium each had assists for Austin.

The Packers out-shot Waseca 35-25 and Austin outscored the Bluejays 5-3 in the third period.
