Anderson returns for third term on council

Published 11:00am Wednesday, November 7, 2012

Austin City Council Member at Large Janet Anderson’s reelection will mean environmental concerns stay on the forefront of the city’s mind.

The council incumbent will return to her seat next year after topping challenger Alex Mayfield 6,897-2,391 with about 74 percent of the vote Tuesday night. The election secured Anderson’s third two-year term on the council.

“I’m thrilled to be re-elected and to serve another two-year term,” Anderson said.

She highlighted the similar goals the city has with the community betterment project Vision 2020, and said she hopes to see the city assist as much as is feasible. That doesn’t mean she wants the city to automatically fund the project, she added.

Flood mitigation is one of the city’s big projects, Anderson said, and as the council’s representative and the chair of the Sustainability Task Force, she also aims to address the city’s other environmental concerns.

“It is one of the city priorities,” Anderson said in October. “The goal was to get more citizen involvement and work toward ideas, discussion and awareness.”

Anderson said her plans to focus also include keeping the budget in check and working toward sustaining the city’s current level of Local Government Aid.

Anderson works in promotion and marketing at KAAL TV. Apart from her time on the City Council she has spent more than 12 years on the city’s Planning Commission, which recommends to the council how to proceed with development projects.

This will be the final two-year term for council member at large. Beginning with the 2014 election, the seat will switch to a four-year term.
