The county is moving ahead on the second phase of the Roosevelt Bridge construction.

The first phase of restoring the historic bridge was completed recently, and the next phase will likely begin in April or May.

The bridge spans the Cedar River on Fourth Street SE between Fourth Avenue and Sixth Avenue.

The work will close the bridge again for most of next summer and will include a new deck, new railings, redoing a headwall, and other changes.

When the project is finished, the bridge will have new sidewalks on both sides.

Previous estimates call for the project to cost about $3.6 million, but only about $800,000 would be local dollars. About $2.1 would come from federal dollars, and about $800,000 would be from state bonds.
