ADAMS — The No. 8 seeded Southland volleyball team meant business as it took care of No. 9 Lyle-Pacelli in three games by scores of 25-11, 25-10, 25-14 in a Section 1A West Division tournament match in Adams Monday.
The Rebels (9-18 overall) put away the first two games early on as Jana Schammel had a five-point serving run to make it 6-0 in the first game and Danielle Hanson had a five-point serving run to make it 5-0 in the second game.
“We came in ready to play because we didn’t know what they were gonna bring or what they had coming,” said Southland senior Haley Kirkpatrick, who had six kills and two aces. “We just came in to play like any other game. I wish it would’ve been a little more intense (for our last home match), but it was a fun game to end on our court.”
LP (9-16 overall) took a 3-0 lead in the third game on an ace by Ann Rysavy, but the Rebels tied it up at 6-6 and the Athletics never took the lead again.
Southland racked up a total of 20 ace serves in the win and senior Addison Tapp had seven aces.
LP head coach Lindsay Leif said her team was a little overwhelmed by the Rebels’ aggressive serving early on.
“They kind of looked like they were shell shocked and the nerves took over,” Leif said. “We couldn’t get our serve receives and Southland played really well. Their hitters attcked the net.”
Leif is still pleased with the improvement her team showed this season. Her squad had four players who were freshmen or younger and the team will return all six of its starters next year.
“They’ve come so far this year,” Leif said. “We’ll be able to take it a step further and run a quicker offense next season.”
The Rebels will focus on a second round matchup at top-ranked Faribault Bethlehem (19-7 overall) Academy Thursday at 7 p.m.
“We’re hoping to keep it close at least and play them hard,” Kirkpatrick said. “We’re gonna practice hard the next couple of days and we’ll give it our all.”
