After stealing his ex-wife’s car last August, a local man has been convicted of felony vehicle theft.

Rashid Rahim, 48, of Austin was sentenced Thursday in Mower County Court to five years’ supervised probation and 80 hours of community service.

Rahim talked to his ex-wife in late August 2011, asking to borrow her car to pick up clothing from a friend’s house. The victim told Rahim he could as long as that was the only thing he was using it for. Later, when the victim drove by that address, she didn’t see her car and called the police.

Police from the University of Minnesota — Twin Cities campus in Minneapolis notified Austin authorities later that day that the stolen car was found, and two people were in custody, Rahim being one of them.
