SHAKOPEE — The Austin Greyhounds are headed to the state amateur baseball tournament for the second straight season.

The Hounds (21-21 overall) lost the supersection title game 8-2 to Victoria, but they beat Moorehead in a state tournament qualifier 9-5 in Shakopee Saturday to advance.

The Hounds will open Class ‘B’ state tournament play against Cold Spring in St. Cloud at Putz Field Friday at 5 p.m.

The tournament is double elimination and if the Hounds win their first game, they would play the winner of Victoria and Dundas Saturday at 5 p.m., if the Hounds lose their first game, they would play in an elimination game Saturday at

11 a.m.

John Frein had a double and two RBIs and Andy Swank had a two-run single in Saturday’s win over Moorehead.

The Hounds jumped to an 8-3 lead, but had to sit through a 45-minute rain delay before putting the finishing touches on the win.

“It’s a good thing we had the lead because it was almost like everybody just wanted to get it over with,” Hounds manager John Frein said.

Moorehead had a runner on and nobody out in the sixth when Andy Swank made the play of the tournament for Austin. The center fielder ran down a fly ball in the left-center field gap and hung on to it as he collided with the fence at full speed.

“It was an unbelievable play and it was a big, big play,” Frein said.

The Hounds had an even more dramatic win over Moorehead in Friday’s opening game of the supersection tournament.

The Hounds won that contest 5-4 in 13 innings and Joe Huffman went the distance as he threw 181 pitches and struck out 14.

Matt Raso had three RBIs in the win and he belted solo homer that tied the game in the bottom of the tenth.

“That was one of the best amateur baseball games I’ve ever been a part of and Joe Huffman was like Jack Morris out there,” Frein said. “He just didn’t want to come out.”
