Track and field: GMLOS advances six to state finals

ST. PAUL — The Grand Meadow-LeRoy-Ostrander-Southland track and field team will have a relay team and three individuals in Saturday’s finals at the Class ‘A’ after they had a solid performance at the state prelims in Hamline University Friday.

GMLOS sophomore Morgan Schmitz took 11th in the discus Friday as she threw a distance of 116 feet, 1-inch, which was nearly 15 further than her distance at the Section 1A meet.

Danielle Hanson made the finals for the first time in her fourth trip to state as she had the third best time with a season’s best mark of 46.78 seconds.

Elizabeth May advanced to the 400-meter dash finals by four-tenths of a second as she was the last qualifier with a time of 59.87 seconds.

The 4 x 200-meter relay team of Sydney Bendtsen, May, Addison Tapp and Betsy Oswald was the last time to get into the finals as they edged out a team from Milaca by seven-hundredths of a second.

The 4 x 400-meter relay team of Bendtsen, Hanson, Betsy Oswald and May team missed out on the finals by two-tenths of a second as they ran three seconds slower than their section time.

GMLOS’s Morgan Schmitz will compete in the discus finals Saturday and McKenzie Kirtz will run in the 1600-meter finals.
