The Riverland baseball team showed some big time maturity as it finished off a two-game sweep with a 10-7 win over Rochester Community and Technical College in Dick Seltz Field Sunday.

The Blue Devils, who beat RCTC 12-2 in five innings in the opener, trailed the nightcap 6-0 before coming back to win.

Victor Claudio, a freshman from Guanica, Puerto Rico, hit a two-run homer to tie the game in the sixth inning and RCC (21-8 overall, 3-1 MCAC South) tacked on three more runs in that frame. Braeden Hunkins was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give the Blue Devils the lead, and Jamie Adams and Donte Bledsoe added sacrifice flies.

“Today was a big step and it should give us a lot of confidence,” RCC head coach Scott Koenigs said. “We’ve got a lot of freshmen but we showed a lot of character and maturity to sweep a pretty darn good team.”

Aaron Palmer, a freshman from Brampton Canada, went 4-for-7 with three doubles and 2 RBIs on the day and Southland grad Chris May finished 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

RCC split a doubleheader with Anoka-Ramsey on Saturday, winning 9-1 and losing 6-4.
