A 46-year-old rural Brownsdale man who hit two squad cars and a deputy with his vehicle was sentenced to probation on Thursday.

Strickland

David Allen Strickland was convicted of terroristic threats, fleeing officers in a motor vehicle and DWI. Two of the three charges are felonies. Strickland’s probation sentence comes in lieu of 15 months in prison, which could be handed down if he violates his probation conditions.

According to court documents, a Brownsdale police car and Mower County deputy’s car were parked in the 100 block of Highway 56 in Brownsdale around 1:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, when Strickland crashed into the Brownsdale squad car.

As a result of the impact, the squad car hit the deputy’s car. According to the police report, Strickland’s vehicle ran into the deputy.

The deputy was not injured.

Strickland fled the scene, driving down Highway 56 at speeds up to 100 mph. The officers whose vehicles had been hit caught up with Strickland about two miles away from the scene of the crash and arrested him.

Strickland refused to be tested for DWI the night of his arrest, but in court he admitted to being intoxicated.

So this guy runs into 2 squad cars, a deputy, flees the scene driving up to 100 mph – so that’s speeding too and admits to driving while intoxicated AND HE ONLY GETS PROBATION?!?! WTF??? I’m sure that probation will make this guy think again before he gets behind the wheel to drink & drive – NOT!!

Everyday new cases prove to me that our entire judicial system is broke. I would like to see the transcript from this trial, did the judge order him to any type of treatment to deal with his drinking problem?? Otherwise guess what folks….he will and could be out there just waiting to use his car to kill someone. The other story from Iowa today about Mr. Halvorson being sentenced to 15 years for killing a 7 yr. old and then fleeing the accident. What this amounts to is probably 5 years with good behavior. If this was your child, grandchild, niece, or neighnbor wouldn’t you feel outraged with such a light sentence—I am!!! Is it just MN and IA where it is so easy to break the and not have to pay for it?? Our new quest should be to contact our county attorney and police department and then perhaps start attending every open court case that we can to see what is happening. The police seem to be putting themselves out there time after time—risking their lives to chase the drunk and armed criminals only to see these creeps let go–very depressing.

The Iowa man sentenced today was Aaron Gunderson–I had the name wrong. On the news tonight they predicted that he would not serve more than 7 yrs., and that little girl is gone forever from her parents life.

15 years to serve seven is more then the probation he would have gotten in mower county courts.
