Deputies called; Dusso, Rohne resign

It wasn’t a meltdown like many predicted, but the Lyle Public School board meeting had some fireworks.

Board members were at odds once more, though board chairman Dean Rohne’s resignation and superintendent Jim Dusso’s decision to leave the district may smooth things in the future.

Rohne resigned from the board in a letter dated Dec. 26 to vice chair Carl Truckenmiller, citing job opportunities that might take his children out of the district. Rohne was not present at Monday night’s meeting.

“As I look back on my six years serving as a board member, I believe the Lyle school is better than it was when I was elected,” Rohne wrote.

Rumors regarding Rohne’s resignation began at the end of December, although Rohne was rumored to have considered resigning throughout the fall. Rohne refused to comment on the rumors regarding his resignation last week.

Rohne did comment on the controversy surrounding Lyle school in his letter, writing the one issue Lyle did have was a public relations one.

“I hope over time certain members of the community will again regain the trust of the board in making decisions for the best interest for the district,” he wrote.

Dusso met with several friends Thursday and the entire staff Friday. At Friday’s meeting, he told staff of his plans and that his wife had accepted a position at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Dusso’s wife will move to Kentucky before the school year ends and he will join her in July. He said he will serve the remainder of his superintendent contract, which expires June 30.

Heated discussion arises

The night wasn’t without its controversies. Board members argued about issues from filling Rohne’s vacant seat to the superintendent search and more, culminating in Mower County Sheriff’s deputies being called to remove Wendy King, the wife of board member Dan King.

The trouble started when several audience members clapped once the board made Rohne’s resignation official. Board member Carl Truckenmiller took offense to the applause, telling the crowd, “I hope that was a clap for his years of service and not that he’s leaving.”

Though Truckenmiller apologized, the audience shouted their opinions.

One citizen said she hoped “the community can come together and have some trust in our board.”

Dusso left the meeting soon after, calling sheriff’s deputies to come and remove Wendy King. The board sent a letter to Wendy in November banning her from attending future board meetings after she was asked to leave its November meeting. Wendy said last week that she intended to come to the January board meeting after challenging the district’s letter and speaking with Sheriff Terese Amazi.

It was clear the deputy did not want to remove Wendy after she gave him a letter and told him she spoke with Amazi.

“I’m between a rock and a hard place,” Deputy Bob Kvam told Wendy.

Dan, Wendy and several audience members asked why she needed to leave, with Dan saying the move was risking a lawsuit. Dan revealed the district had also sent him a letter forbidding him from going to the school and speaking with teachers. Dan also said he and his wife decided to pull their children from Lyle school last month after they spoke with Amazi over the pressure their children faced at school.

“My children are being harassed,” Dan told Truckenmiller after Truckenmiller accused King of not caring about the school.

Newly sworn in board chairman Jerry Sampson eventually spoke to the deputy, asking him to allow Wendy to stay but to stick around in case there was more trouble.

Board member King said after the meeting he and his family felt targeted by Dusso.

“(It was) pure vindictive behavior by our superintendent,” he said. “He would do anything in his power to harm us.”

Sampson to lead board

Incoming board member Jerry Sampson was appointed board chairman Monday night. Sampson, who previously served three terms on the board, will serve the remainder of former member Scott Nelson’s term, which is up for election this November.

“I’m up to the opportunity,” Sampson said.

The board also appointed Brandon Slowinski to fill Rohne’s seat, although Slowinski will have to wait until February to officially join the board.

Yet Dusso’s intention to leave the district in July means the board must find a new superintendent and principal. Board member Jessie Meyer told the board Grand Meadow and Glenville/Emmons Superintendent Jerry Reshetar would not resign this year, which hampers Lyle’s plans to find a new superintendent. The board’s plan when they hired Dusso as superintendent was to rejoin the three-school consortium by hiring a superintendent to preside over all three districts Reshetar resigned from Lyle in April of 2011 but stayed on at Grand Meadow and Glenville/Emmons. Reshetar had planned to resign from the other two schools after this year.

The board directed Sampson to meet with Reshetar and Dusso to come up with a reasonable solution for the board’s administrative issues.

Public comment policy changes

The board will change its public comment policy next month after deciding to emulate Austin Public Schools’ public comment policy.

Board members decided to allot 25 minutes to public comment and allow up to five speakers to give their thoughts under a five-minute time limit. Speakers would sign up about 15 minutes before a board meeting.

It is unclear how the board would deal with residents who called ahead to sign up or how more than five delegates would be accommodated, though board members did propose having residents who were speaking on the same issue decide among themselves who would speak.

The board must read and discuss the new policy twice before adopting it.

Facing the future

Though the board and administration are going through a change in leadership, Dusso’s and Rohne’s resignations leave the district in a difficult position.

The board will meet in February to discuss its strategic planning, at which point they’ll also discuss how to hire new administration.

Dusso said he will still be as vigilant about Lyle students’ education.

“It’s not over,” he said. “I’ve been very pleased with a lot of the things we’ve accomplished in this short time. I’ve always had positive things to say and that’s what I’m going to continue to do. It’s been a growing experience.”

Yet Dusso’s departure doesn’t mean residents who criticize his decisions are willing to let the issues surrounding his leadership be.

“Tonight … he was finally put in his place,” said Wendy King.

Dusso hopes residents on both sides of the issue are able to reconcile and the school can succeed in their previous efforts to bring the community together.

“My hope is that somehow or another people can get beyond that. As I said in my statement, relationships can be reestablished and respect can grow again,” he said.

This sounds like the most productive board meeting in the last year. I feel sorry for those who have to put up with him until July.

Congratulations to all those brave people in the Lyle School District who have had the courage to stand up to the bullies and their followers. It takes courage to engage in public disobedience when public officials allow
no public comment at public meetings, or deny comments based on their own agendas. It takes courage to speak out when elected officials are not allowed to comment on the public business they were elected to conduct. It takes courage to ask the hard questions, questions like: Since when does the superintendent, an employee of the school district hired by the school board, get to tell the school board what to do? When was the last time you
got to tell your boss when he could talk and what he could do?

Clearly, Mr. Dusso’s supporters are far outnumbered by those who disagree not only with his current behavior, but his past behavior as well. Perhaps their “support” is in name only; it’s certainly easier to “go along to get
along” while in the workplace. We’ve seen multiple examples of the firings, demotions and dismissive treatment afforded to those who disagree with this administration, from teachers to office staff to
    paraprofessionals, custodians and bus drivers.

It sounds like changes are being made and more positive changes are coming. Stay strong and keep up the good fight. Remember, bullies only thrive in the dark. We all hold the key to turning on the light. Remember to vote at your next school board election.

Well Chicagostyle——don’t put your own spin on what I said. I will always support the Cancer Telethon and fundraisers but I will do it now in Rochester, Mason City or Austin—-not in Lyle. Lyle has received a black eye from this current crap that is going on, perhaps you can’t see the writing on the wall.

Why PLEASE does Mr. Dusso and all of his followers think you have the right to tell people to shut up, and to stop commenting. The truth is you are cruel. I have been out in Lyle and this is not the topic at all. In fact people don’t even discuss this stuff because we as a town are above wasting our time letting Mr Dusso and people like you bring us down. You and walkthewalk have no right to discuss the cancer telethon on here. It is clear you have never been touched by cancer. You should be ashamed of your selves. You can not label an entire town of people you obviously don’t even know. I would also like to thank truthtalker! You do know what you are talking about!!!

By the way, Still Love Lyle. I am a resident of Lyle and my family has been for generations and will be for generations to come. I don’t consider those doing this to our community part of Lyle. Most of them didn’t grow up in Lyle and have no respect for what the town stands for or did. Jim Dusso didn’t reck our town, in my opinion, those that love to air our dirty laundry in the papers all the time have.

Please it is hard for me to think that you and your family are from Lyle. I don’t know anyone from Lyle that would even comment on the Cancer telethon in this manner, or try and relate it to the mess at our school. The telethon and school have nothing to do with each other. This town does stand for good things and you are right the people that have encouraged this mess are not from this wonderful town of LYLE!!! You still can’t make me hate this town no matter what you say!!!!!!! Sorry……. Also I would just like to say that Mr Dusso does not encourage communication and I think in your heart you know that. This town will get over this. Lyle has been through other tough times. The people here are good, no one can change that.

Would you like to compare longevity or respect for Lyle?

Jim Dusso has lived there how long? Oh, that’s right. He still doesn’t. He didn’t attend prom or any homecoming events. None. He’s rarely at athletic events. He doesn’t support community events — ever.

You know what airing dirty laundry does? It cleans it. Not talking about poor behavior doesn’t stop it, it encourages it. People will behave badly until someone says or does something about it.

That’s exactly what the “protesters” are doing. They aren’t doing it TO Lyle, they’re doing it FOR Lyle. The majority of them were supporters of having the new school built. Even those who were against the new school have taken a stand to get Dusso out of there, in order to save that new school. Take a good look at who you’re talking about, and check how long they’ve been around. Take a look at what their history with the town is. Consider the businesses they run, the churches they attend and the events they support.

Then tell me who’s wrecking our town.

What part of what truthtalker has written isn’t the truth
I would like to know so I can get my facts straight.
I do know Wendy did not say a word at that meeting before the deputy showed up. Jim Dusso decided on his own to make a scene by calling the sheriff. His threats of legal action would be laughable in any court. This is just one more
example of how he thinks he should handle things. He is required to have an agenda 3 Days ahead of the meeting. His bumbling excuse of how the resignation was handled and how he didn’t get the van ordered in time was just another example of his extreme incompetence of any type of management matters. He is getting paid executive wages for this type of performance.

    To Just my opinion,

I can list several parts to truthtalker’s comments that aren’t true.

    1. “…no public comment at public meetings.” Have you even read Minnesota’s open meeting law? They state that the purpose of open meetings is for the public to be INFORMED. The courts have not upheld public comments at open meetings. Read up on it, but a public meeting does not mean the public nesessarily has the right to speak.

    2. “deny comments based on their own agendas” The Board has a policy that you need to sign up before the meeting to get on the agenda. The people that have been denied could not even put down what they wanted to talk about. They just wanted to put their names down on the agenda.

    3. “superintendent get to tell the school board what to do” In the board meetings I have been to, Dusso made suggestions about several items. The Board then agreed to do what he suggested. The Board had the decision to not agree with him. I did see unanimous decisions made, too.

    4. “firings, demotions and dismissive treatment afforded to those who disagree with this administration” The firings happened after the employee’s own decision to do something ILLEGAL. Stealing would be grounds for firing for any employee at any job. Teacher reassignments are not demotions.

    5. “bullies only thrive in the dark” Isn’t that what you are doing by hiding your true identity and making false accusations?? I will reveal my identity when you, still love, just my opinion, The Truth, ChicagoStyle, hartman, article 10, and truthtalker all reveal their identities.

BTW, I also will not be attedning the cancer telethon this year. I am only asked to give to one place: the church, at 10% of my income. After that I can chosse how to spend my money. It is not shameful if I decide this year to not support cancer research but support one of many other causes, such as MS, diabetes, autism, earthquake and tsunami clean-up, the Red Cross, or the Salvation Army.

With all the disrespect, false accusations, broken friendships over one issue, and judgment going on over the past year, it is going to take a long time to repair all the damage done. A lot longer than just this summer and next election when a new superintendent and Board members are present.

Blue and green I could care less if you reveal your identity. It means nothing to me. i don’t think
Did I make a false accusation? If so what was it?

BTW-you have to give your money to more than 1 place. The school district and the state that pay for the school and the salaries of those educating the youth in Lyle. Also the county taxes to pay for the deputies and court system time that is being used up by the situation in Lyle.

You are correct it will take a long time for the city to heal from this but with Dusso still there the healing would not begin.

You seem like you have a lot of inside knowledge of the dealings at the school.

I don’t know anything here that is “inside knowledge.” Everything I have posted was information received from either The Austin Daily Herald, the Post Bulletin, KAAL, comments left here and my own research on the MN tax law. People say a lot of stuff.

    Blue and Green…

I think maybe You should go and read the MN Open Meeting Law AGAIN. The purpose of an open meeting is also…

“To afford the public an opportunity to present its views to the public body”.
    As well as,
“To prohibit actions being taken at a secret meeting where it is impossible for the interested public to become fully informed about a public boards decisions or to detect improper influence”. Hmmm….that would never happen?

It is true that a board does not “have” to allow public comment. Shutting down the public, the ones that elect you, not to mention sustain the school itself through their taxes, will never be well received. This is pretty evident here in Lyle.

As far as your statement that the people signing up to be on the agenda ” could not even put down what they want to talk about”… I find it interesting that you would know what any of them actually stated in their request. It states in the public commente policy that the Superintendent and/or Board Chair will read the requests and determine whether or not they will be allowed to speak. How exactly is it that you “know” these details? Did you see these requests?

Truthtalker, thank you for your comments, they are spot on.

On the up side of all this dysfunction…. with the addition of our new Board Chair, we finally have a glimmer of hope for our board to once again, after many years, be a functioning board. It is the best thing to happen in a very long time.
