The Austin boys basketball team couldn’t hang on to late four-point lead as they lost 53-50 at Rochester Mayo (1-2 overall, 1-0 Big Nine) Friday.

The Packers (2-2 overall, 1-1 Big Nine) held a 50-46 advantage but two turnovers led to Mayo scores and Nate Pinz put the Spartans up for good when he drilled a three to make it 51-50 with 35 seconds left.

Austin’s Joe Aase, who scored 13 points, missed a go-ahead three with five seconds left in the game.

“Right now the expectations for our team are just too high,” Austin head coach Kris Fadness said. “We’re young and we’ve got a ways to go. We’ve got to get a little tougher, both physically and mentally.”

Mayo hit 7-of-13 from downtown while the Packers were just 3-for-19 on threes. Austin forced 23 Mayo turnovers, but it wasn’t enough.
