Senior Center hosting Christmas open house

Published 5:06 pm Saturday, December 3, 2011

When it comes to entertaining, the holidays are open season, as in open hearts, open gifts, and, our favorite, open houses.

With glad tidings, the smell of evergreens, twinkling lights, homemade treats, the Senior Center will be hosting a Christmas open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday,. The event is free and open to the public.

Come in and help us celebrate 20 years in this building. Lets share in the Christmas cheer as we celebrate this time of the year.

Legal advice clinic

We are having another legal advice clinic. Joshua is back. Take advantage of this free consultation.

All you have to do is make an appointment. He will be here from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Stop by or call the front desk to find out what times are available at 433-2370 ext. 0.

Joshua will be offering free power of attorneys, health care directives, estate planning document reviews and advice. Participants should bring their existing documents for a free review as many laws have changed. This is especially important for married couples as assets need to be bequest properly to avoid Medicaid from claiming them.

He will also field questions you may have regarding estate planning, elder law, and Medicaid (health care assistance) planning.

At the end of the meeting you will leave with power of attorneys and health care directives signed and notarized.

Power of attorney

The Power of Attorney allows you to name a trusted person to act on your behalf for financial matters should you ever unfortunately become incapacitated or unable to make decisions for yourself.

This document will allow your named person to pay your bills, collect checks and payments for you, as well as making a range of other financial decisions on your behalf.

This document should be updated every five years.

Health care directive

The health care directive is a document that allows you to name the person that you want in charge of making medical decisions for you in the unfortunate situation that you are unable to.

The health care directive also allows you to express your wishes with regards to the level of medical care you wish to receive should you be classified as being in a persisted vegetative state or if medical professionals diagnose you with a condition where there is little to no chance of survival.

This document is only effective should you be unable to make decisions for yourself.

While these documents deal with topics that are often hard to discuss, they are, however very important to have for your own well being and to help guide your family and loved ones in making decisions that are in your best interest and meet your desires.
