Owner’s wife to lease former Tolly’s site

A landmark restaurant for many Austin residents will close this year.

Scott Johnson announced he will be closing Jerry’s Other Place, but his wife, Julie Johnson, will open a diner in the site of Tolly’s Time Out, which will be called Home Plate.

Scott said Jerry’s, at 1207 N Main St., will close toward the end of 2011. It opened in 1980 and Scott has owned it since 2007.

He declined to say why he’s closing Jerry’s, although the restaurant has had financial difficulties. According to the Mower County Treasurer’s office, Jerry’s owes $14,449 in delinquent property taxes.

He said Jerry’s has about 22 employees, and around five of them will be working at the new restaurant, but deferred all other questions about the new venture to his wife.

Vern Bishop, who eats breakfast with a group at Jerry’s every Thursday, said she was surprised the restaurant is closing.

“It’s unfortunate,” she said. “There aren’t too many places that we go for breakfast other than this, so we’ll miss it. I hate to see another restaurant go.”

Shirley Cahill, who also eats breakfast at Jerry’s on Thursdays, said she is disappointed by the news, too.

“It’s been a real stable restaurant through the years,” she said. “I feel bad. We’re losing another business.”

Julie will lease the property at 100 14th St. SW from Peggy Tollefson. Tolly’s Time Out closed May 7.

Julie was not available Thursday morning.

It’s my understanding the new joint is going to be breakfast and lunch only…..NOT what I was hoping would happen to Tolly’s. This town has become a restaurant desert.

Its interesting that the ADH also reported boldly as a headline when the owner got in some trouble during a tough time in his life, giving everyone the name of his business.

I am sure that really helped his bottom line.

Jerry’s was always busy when I went in there so I doubt it’s demise was lack of customers

@freiheit – If you don’t want to get your name in the ADH then don’t do anything illegal. When Mr Johnson got in trouble the paper simply reported the news – if he’d kept his ‘nose clean’ there wouldn’t have been any story. And yes it is a story when a local businessman participates in illegal activities. I’m guessing this is a way to go bankrupt w/Jerry’s and still have another business to run!! I wouldn’t be feeling too bad about Mr Johnson’s situation!

formeraustin, In our liberal world of equal rights etc. If the ADH gives the source of one man’s income no matter who he is, then to be equal everyones source of income should be reported when they get in trouble. Name of your employer place of work or for the liberals the gvt dept they recieve tax payers monies from.

@freht – When someone is operating a public business they are asking the public to trust them and believe in their business. As a businessperson in the community, Mr. Johnson should behave in a manner that is without reproach. If he so elects to behave in a manner unbecoming a businessperson, then he can expect consequences. This wasn’t a ‘tough time in his life’ – he made a conscious decision to partake of drugs. A lot of people don’t want to spend their money where it’s going for other’s drug habits nor do they condone that type of behavior. Do you honestly think if the ADH didn’t state Jerry’s in the story they ran that no one would know who Scott Johnson was or what business he was associated? This is Austin – Get Real!!
