The Pacelli girls tennis team opened its season with a pair of 6-1 losses to Worthington and Albert Lea at the Albert Lea Invite Tuesday.

The Shamrocks (0-2 overall) had to forfeit one singles match and two doubles matches in each contest.

Against Albert Lea, Pacelli’s No. 2 singles player Maggie Leif picked up the lone win with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Susie Martin.

“I was really proud of the way Maggie finished her first match,” Pacelli head coach Mark Henderson said. “With the humidity today, all of the close matches were really about who could fight through the fatigue, and Maggie did a great job of that.”

Against Worthington, Mindy Nguyen picked up the lone win at No. 3 singles with a 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4), 10-7 victory over Rachel Drietz.

“Mindy showed the most toughness I have ever seen from her,” Henderson said. “Winning any match where every set is decided by tiebreakers shows a lot of heart.”
