Looking ahead to the State FairPublished 6:53pm Saturday, August 20, 2011
Now that Mower County Fair is behind us, we are looking ahead to one of our nation’s largest fairs featuring agriculture, education and so much more. It’s the “Greatest Show on Earth” located all on one large grounds.Indians
Each year we plan a trip to Senior Day on Sept. 1 at the Minnesota State Fair.
We walk directly in at Heritage Square. On-going music this year will be The High 48’s, and the Blue Grass Band, plus the Tommy Horton Show. You could also pick up a turkey leg, roasted nuts, and take part in a large variety of stands with unique hand-crafted items and even the first “Comfort Stop.”
The educational building is a stop where you can have your blood pressure checked, find out about various schools offered within our area, visit beautiful garden displays, or to watch the High School Rodeo Horse Show at the Coliseum.
Several bandshells offer ongoing music including The Midtown Men, four stars from the original cast of “Jersey Boys,” and many more. All these are scheduled for our stop on Sept. 1.
There is no lack of a variety of food choices, many offered on a stick. How about deep fried bananas, cheese cake, alligator, camel on a stick or even a Twinkie. Lynn’s Lefsa, a bucket of fresh chocolate cookies are not to be missed.
Each afternoon at 2 p.m. are short 15-minute features by a local school band plus lots of horses, tractors and cartoon characters.
This trip is open for all ages and have planned a longer day this year. We will be leaving at 7 a.m. and returning about 6:30 p.m. Call our Travel Number at 507-438-3946 or stop by our office for more information.
Thursday: Minnesota Twins versus the Baltimore Orioles. Trip will leave at 9 a.m. from the Wal-Mart parking lot.
Sept. 18: “Hairspray,” at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatres.
Sept. 6-17: Heading West. A one-day Amtrack ride will start our tour as we have a full trip planned including California. We can still add 4 persons.
