Get ready for the weekend, because the 24th annual Hayfield Hey Days are here.

One of the more popular area celebrations, Hey Days does several things that keep people coming from near and far, organizers say.

For one, it features something different every year. Two years ago, they had the Budweiser Clydesdales. Last year, they had a Civil War re-enactment. This year, it’s all about the veterans.

A “Field of Flags” celebration will take place at noon Friday at the Field Crest Care Center on Highway 30. Lana Mindrup, president of the celebration’s committee, said people can dedicate flags in honor of any veteran they choose. At 5 p.m., there will be a 21-gun salute and ceremony.

There’s music all weekend, but Friday, it may be a bit amateur, organizers warn. “The Voice of Hayfield Finale” karaoke contest will come to a close after the final 16 contestants from the ongoing competition compete at 8:30 p.m.

“It should be a very interesting competition,” Mindrup said. “They’re all very good.”

Saturday, Hey Day-ers will get plenty of exercise with softball, volleyball and a 5-kilometer walk/run. However, all the exercise may be overshadowed by the pie-eating relay at 8 p.m. More music will follow on Saturday night, with So Big on stage.

But organizers save the tradition for last. Every year, the parade is one of the biggest attractions to Hey Days.

“You get to see how many people come to town and are enjoying that part of it,” Mindrup said, as she is also chairperson for the Hey Day Queen Committee. Mindrup said Hayfield has received a lot of positive feedback on its parade each year.

Another interesting aspect to Hayfield’s parade is a group of kids, 12 to 18, who have overcome some of life’s barriers and formed their own drumline, Sheltered Reality. The group will perform in the parade, as well as have its own show afterward at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The annual event closes with a fireworks display.
