Break on through (to the cooler side)

Be cool, Austin.

The long-awaited cold front finally snapped the excessive heat warning in place for much of this week, driving temps down to manageable levels Thursday morning.

Though temperatures will reach nearly 84 degrees today, the heat index shouldn’t drive temps up. There’s a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms tonight with a low around 68, but the bad weather is more likely to hit Iowa, according to Tom Stangeland, hydrometeorological technician at National Weather Service — La Crosse.

Temps could shoot up Saturday, with a high near 90 and a heat index pushing past 100.

“(The cold front) starts lifting back into a warm flow again,” Stangeland said.

Temps should level out by Sunday, but showers and thunderstorms are expected to stretch through the weekend. Residents should see sunny skies starting Monday, according to the NWS forecast.

Thursday should be the first day this week when the heat index doesn’t clear 100 degrees. Austin had heat index readings of 121 on Monday and Tuesday, and 111 degrees on Wednesday.
