Hounds get past Blue SoxPublished 11:25pm Wednesday, June 8, 2011
The Austin Greyhounds had to come up with a late rally to get past the Austin Blue Sox in a 17-14 win in Marcusen Park Wednesday.
The Hounds (5-3 overall) trailed 14-13 going into the bottom of the eighth, but they came through as Dan Swift launched a two-run homer over the right field fence and Dan Zielke singled in two more runs to put it away.
For Swift and a few of the other Hounds who were on the Blue Sox last season, the game was pretty surreal.
“You look into the dugout and you see those uniforms and its kind of weird whenever somebody came up to first base,” Swift said. “You realize you’re playing against one of your old teammates and it’s a little different to say the least.”
Swift finished with four RBIs, Matt Cano was three-for-three with a double and three RBIs, and John Kirby had an inside-the-park three-run homer for the Hounds.
“I haven’t spent enough time in the cage,” Swift said. “If we get a couple of more games and get in the cage a little we should be all right. It should be an exciting season.”
The Blue Sox (0-4 overall) were led by Mark Harber, who drove in three runs. The Blue Sox came into the game hitting just .119 and they had scored just one run, but they finally found their hitting stroke as they piled up 13 hits.
“We had talked about coming to the plate with agood approach and having intensity,” Blue Sox player/manager Josh Kunze said. “This was a big game and we didn’t want to play second fiddle. We didn’t back down and that was important.”
