Auditor-treasurer’s office waiting on GOP to pay recount costs

The 2010 election isn’t 100 percent complete in Mower County.

Auditor-Treasurer Doug Groh is still waiting for a $2,242 payment from the Republican Party to reimburse his office for collecting and copying of voting data during the governor’s recount.

Groh first sent the bill to the GOP, which ran the recount for Tom Emmer, on Nov. 24. At first, Groh said the GOP lost the bill, and officials assured Groh they would send it.

Groh said officials have promised to send the payment, but it never comes.

“It’s now March, and I don’t know what kind of difficulties they’re having,”

Groh said. “I just know I’d like to get it paid and get it behind us.”

At one point, Groh said he was told the GOP didn’t have available funds. However, state GOP officials denied having financial trouble last year.

The Democratic Party paid Gov. Dayton’s $1,877 portion of the recount in early December, and Mayoral candidate Marian Clennon already paid for a recount in the mayor’s race out of pocket, Groh said.

Groh has been contacting the GOP regularly and said he expects payment soon.

“I expect a major party like the Republicans would have funds available to make payments,” Groh said.
