23 cited for underage consumption

Published 10:29am Monday, February 7, 2011

Austin police wrote 23 minor consumption tickets Friday night at a local party.

Police Captain Dave McKichan said 10 of the tickets were given to underage adults and 13 to juveniles. Most of the party goers were close to the age of 18, he said.

McKichan said 23 minor citations is quite a few and police rarely bust that many people in one place.

Nobody had been cited for violating the social host ordinance as of Monday morning.

Now that i’m thirty something years old I don’t care to much, but…… I kinda get mad when I hear about adults over the age of 18 but under 21 getting a ticket for drinking. You can vote, go to war, be sent to prison but you can’t drink a beer????

You would think that our officers would have something better to do. I do agree with soapbox they should be able to drink if they are old enough to join the miltary and go and kill people.

Then they should join the Military. When I joined I was able to drink on base at 18 years old. Maybe they should also have to follow the UCMJ and the punishment that comes along with over drinking and poor decision making…you know, like the kids in the Military.

I did not see anything above in the article about staying over night and or designated drivers. Besides it is still illegal to consume under the age of 21…RIGHT?

Most but not all were around 18…What’s the youngest age? Where was the party? Was it someone’s house? Who owned that house? How did kids get enough alcohol for 23 people? A lot of these have the same old answers…so it’s up to the community to decide how large of an issue underage drinking should be. But that discussion shouldn’t wait until a teenager dies because they just weren’t ready to fully grasp the situation. That’s why stories like this are good, if a parent can use it to generate a real discussion with their children then we all win.

How very sad – this was a goodby party for the hometown guys being deployed later this spring – for some it might just be the last time they see their friends. Who rats out these parties? A neighbor with nothing better to do? A person at the party worried they would catch HE## when they get home? Or were there too many cars in the street and the local gestapo got suspicious and knocked on the door. Like I said earlier – how sad.
