MINNEAPOLIS — The federal government has declared 21 counties in southern Minnesota disaster areas — including Mower County.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says federal funds are available to local and state government and some nonprofit agencies in the area struck by severe storms and flooding starting Sept. 22.

Preliminary estimates peg flood damage at $64 million, including nearly $45 million to public infrastructure. More than 600 homes were damaged or destroyed.

The aid is available for emergency work and the repair or replacement of damaged facilities.

The counties include Blue Earth, Cottonwood, Dodge, Faribault, Freeborn, Goodhue, Jackson, Lincoln, Lyon, Martin, Mower, Murray, Olmsted, Pipestone, Rice, Rock, Steele, Wabasha, Waseca, Watonwan and Winona.

When I was a kid there was NEVER any fooding in Austin. Then in July of 1973 or 1974 not quite sure Austin received two rain storms back to back and it flooded the Cedar River causing much damage to homes.

The problem as to WHY it FLOODS in Austin has NOT been addressed by authorities or local government. It is run off from TILED FARM LAND! It has no where to go but the Cedar River. SOLUTION; Build a RESERVIOR with flood gates south of Austin to prevent future flooding in Austin. With ALL the FEDERAL0 GRANT MONEY aquired by the Local Government this should NOT be a problem .

You may leave me no opportunity but to run for local office if you can not figure this basic problem out???

How many Local Officials do you need to THINK OUT side the BOX?????
