Many students would not dare go to school in their pajamas and slippers. And, they simply cannot show up for their first hour class at 10 p.m.

But one Minnesota junior high and high school offers just that, as well as a state-approved curriculum, which leads to a high school diploma.

BlueSky Online School will hold an open house in the Austin Public Library Thursday evening at 6 p.m.

It is Minnesota’s first, but not only, online charter school, serving students across the state in grades seven through 12.

“The typical BlueSky student needs flexibility,” director of the school, Jeffrey Schulz, said.

“They are often students for whom traditional learning does not work,” he continued.

BlueSky’s 750 students include young parents, professional athletes, full-time workers, students with medical conditions, and students who prefer alternative learning, he said.

“We don’t require students to be in their seats from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Faculty and staff are available at all times of the day and night,” Schulz said.

The nature of BlueSky courses are multimedia based, with teachers giving virtual lectures that students can view at their convenience — but they still put in the same studying time as traditional students. Assignments are often interactive, through course web sites, Schulz said.

Schulz will explain the philosophy behind BlueSky, which was started in 2001, and how it compares to traditional schools at the open house. BlueSky teachers, students and their families will also be there to meet each other and chat with potential students.

BlueSky is based out of St. Paul and its teachers are professionally trained and licensed by the state of Minnesota. Tuition is free for Minnesota residents.
