LETTER: Bill should be strengthened, then passed
Published 9:56am Friday, July 3, 2009On Friday, Congress took a historic step toward a clean energy economy by passing the American Clean Energy and Security Act.
This bill sets up the first ever national plan to address global warming, reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and transition to a clean energy economy.
As the author the June 25 letter “Aiming for a Better World” noted, we cannot afford to wait.
In 2006, Minnesota spent $3,057 per capita on fossil fuels.
In 2030, Minnesota will spend as much as $1,949 more per person every year on fossil fuels if we stay on our current energy path.
We spend this money to endanger our special places with global warming pollution, and our own health with air and water pollution.
I want to wholeheartedly thank Representative Tim Walz for putting our state’s natural beauty and the pocketbooks and health of Minnesota families first by voting to pass this landmark legislation.
The bill now moves to the U.S. Senate. We urge our Senators to strengthen and pass the bill to deliver on the promise that clean energy holds to recharge our economy, put thousands of Minnesotans back to work, and protect our state’s rivers, lakes, streams and great outdoors from global warming.
